Wine Fun From Italy>> Secrets To Building Expert Wine Cellers <<
California boasts more than twenty different winegrowing regions, each with distinctive personalities reflected in the landscape, the wineries and the wines, and even familiar spots have undiscovered back roads and spectacular but less-visited regions within the region. In fact, California now has 107 different American Viticultural Areas or AVAs, delimited winegrowing areas recognized by the federal government. Wine is a signature product of California and an important part of the cultural and physical landscape of the state. California is the fourth largest wine producer in the world and Golden State wineries produce 90 percent of all U.S. wine!
Every Italian province produces its local wines, and every one has its fiercely loyal partisans who argue - often with good reason - that their wine can compete with the best around. But perhaps because there are so many choices, a lot of people in this country simply throw up their hands and stick with the old standards. Ask a friend to name an Italian wine and chances are he'll come back with Lambrusco, the light, slightly sweet and fizzy red wine from the region around Bologna. It is the largest-selling imported wine in the United States. There are nearly as many types of wine glasses as there are varieties of wines, it seems. Of course many wine glass types were specifically made for particular types of wine, such as the traditional rounder red wine glass style. Local wine fanciers get plenty of exposure to Soave, Bardolino and Valpolicella from Bolla, a winery not far from Venice, because Bolla's simple, decent but mildly overpriced products are brought to the U.S. by a subsidiary of Louisville's Brown-Forman Corp. These are all good wines, but Italy offers so much more. The Greeks brought wine to Italy long before Caesar's time, and Italians have been making, consuming and exporting the stuff ever since. Italian vino ranks among the world's best wines. And here is the happiest secret of all about Italian wine: It is still a bargain. Travelling to wine regions is another way of increasing skill in tasting. Many wine producers in wine regions all over the world offer tastings of their wine. Depending on the country or region, tasting at the winery may incur a small charge to allow the producer to cover costs.
